MS-DOS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Still later versions of MS Windows ran independently of DOS but included much of the old code such that DOS could run in virtual machines under the new OS.
There are a number of other emulators for running DOS under various versions of UNIX, even on non-x86 platforms.
Microsoft decided to use backslashes as pathname separators rather than slashes as on Unix apparently due to the latter character being used as the switch character in most DOS and CP/M programs.

Displays the version table and sets the version of DOS that is reported to programs.
Whenever you enter a DOS command that deals with disk drives and you are already working in the drive in question, you do not have to enter the drive designator.
If you do not enter a drive designation, DOS always assumes you are referring to the drive you are currently working in (sometimes called the "default" drive).

 MS-DOS - Ursine
Often known simply as DOS, which annoys people familiar with other similarly abbreviated operating systems (the name goes back to the mid-1960s, when it was attached to IBM's first disk operating system for the 360).
Some people like to pronounce DOS like “dose”, as in “I don't work on dose, man!”, or to compare it to a dose of brain-damaging drugs (a slogan button in wide circulation among hackers exhorts: “MS-DOS: Just say No!”).
The name further annoys those who know what the term operating system does (or ought to) connote; DOS is more properly a set of relatively simple interrupt services.

 Using MS-DOS
From a DOS prompt you can enter EDIT two ways: the first is by typing EDIT and the filename you wish to edit, and the second is by typing EDIT and hitting the ENTER key.
To edit a line, enter the line number at the * prompt and press enter.

 MS DOS
In the DOS that first supported hard drives, MS-DOS version 2.1, a special data structure was created to keep track of where the data was stored on the hard drive.
DOS can quickly locate and execute program instructions for internal commands because they are store in RAM and are easily accessed.
DOS is composed of three main files, accompanied by roughly 80 support files.

 MS-DOS
Unlike editors that were supplied with early versions of MS DOS you do not need to memorise a large number of commands; all the commands you need to use are available from the menu bar, which is displayed at the top of the screen.

When you are using MS DOS you will be located in a directory, which is known as your working directory.

CP/M - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since MS DOS had access to more memory, more commands were built-in, most usefully the file COPY command.
Later versions of CP/M-86 made significant strides in terms of performance and usability however, and for some time in the 1980s was considered to be a better x86 OS than MS-DOS.
The BDOS commands in turn were sent to the BIOS as a string of even simpler instructions, like "move the disk head to this sector, read raw data from sector..." etc. The BIOS would then do the actual controlling of the hardware, such as sending pulses to the stepper motor of the drive.

Networking MS-DOS PC's - They said it couldn't be done
I have successfully used the native MS-DOS which underlies Windows 98 on PC's down to 80386's, and the rest of this document assumes you are using this version of MS-DOS.
It is far better to admit that you don't know what you're doing before you start (and learn what you are meant to do) than get halfway through an installation and find that you have a completely unusable PC on your hands, which you don't know how to fix.
If the PC you are going to network has software or data which you do not wish to lose; backup the PC first.

MS-DOS EDIT and QBASIC Command Line Switches (81360)
If the Editor or QBasic pull-down menus do not show the short cut keys on a CGA monitor, then use the /B switch when starting Editor or QBasic.
If Editor or QBasic pull-down menus do not show the short cut keys on a system that does not support bold characters, use the /NOHI switch when starting Editor or QBasic.
This switch should be used to run Editor or QBasic on a monochrome monitor with a color graphics card.

 MS-DOS Editor
MS-DOS Editor is a useful program that opens or creates a plain text file and edits it.
There are some major differences between them: The newer version can be used to edit custom language (non-European) files under Windows 9x, and it supports Windows style shortcut keys such as Ctrl + X, Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V. Additionally, it can have multiple files open at a time.
In fact, you can use it without the file "EDIT.COM".

 r_harvey - Exploring MS-DOS
DOS does not inform programs that they have been paused, or that they are about to be involuntarily terminated.
DOS reuses directory entries as files are created, deleted and renamed, so files on the disk are rarely sorted, and their order in the directory listing can change.
Since DOS allocates subdirectory entries on an as-needed basis, reusing deleted directory entries, some new files may be excluded from the Filer list when it exceeds 100 files, even though alphabetically they come before the last entry that made it into the listing.

 MS-DOS COMMANDS
If an operation or set of operations is performed repeatedly from the DOS prompt, the command or set of commands can be stored in a special type of file called a batch file.

The advantage is that you have a very powerful text editing and in some cases line drawing program.

 Merlyn - MS-DOS Batch Introduction Page - J R Stockton
Microsoft DOS exists in versions 1.0 to 6.22, and is simulated within versions of Microsoft Windows (as MS-DOS versions 7 or higher); I will assume those here (I have in use Amstrad DOS 3.30, MS-DOS 6.20, and Windows 98).
Such DOS boxes are, to a first approximation, independent MS-DOS machines operating on a communal file structure.
The short version of a LFN is not stable under Move or Copy, or editing the file with backup.

 MS-DOS
This behavoir can be implemented on MS-DOS, but I cannot yet find time to do it.
Main idea is to create "processes" as just information structures in memory, which hold argc, argv and IO redirection info, and execute them in order (due to single-tasking nature of DOS).
[exec] isn't useful (DOS doesn't support multi-tasking, exactly), and there's no way of dynmically loading extensions, yet.
