  Wikipedia:Edit summary
In the case of a small addition to an article, such as one sentence, the full text of this addition can be copied to the summary field, giving a maximum of info with a minimum of effort (you can write up to 200 characters in the summary).
In addition to a summary of the change itself, the summary field may also contain an explanation of the change; note that if the reason of an edit is not clear, it is more likely to be reverted, especially in the case that some text is deleted.
We've found that summaries often pique the interest of wikipedians with an expertise in the area.

The distinction between major and minor edits is significant because you may decide to ignore minor edits when viewing recent changes; logged-in users can even set their preferences to not display them.
If you accidentally mark an edit as minor when it was in fact a major edit, you should make a second, "dummy" edit, but note that "the previous edit was major" in the edit summary.
An administrator can semi-automatically revert the edits of the last editor of a page; all such "rollback" reversions are marked as minor by the wiki software.

A dummy edit is a change in wikitext that has no effect on the rendered page, such as changing the number of newlines at some position from 0 to 1 or from 2 to 3 or conversely (changing from 1 to 2 makes a difference, see below).
This feature is important, because users can choose to hide minor edits in their view of the Recent Changes page, to keep the volume of edits down to a manageable level.
The rule of thumb is that an edit of a page that consists of spelling corrections, formatting, and minor rearranging of text should be flagged as a "minor edit".

Listing all the summaries underneath each page's entry in RecentChanges leads to a lot of unrelated and redundant entries that could be simplified, especially when someone enters an edit and view and save cycle, creating multiple new versions with the same summary.
An edit summary has never been a part of that for me. I'd be interested in technology that made it easier to validate the most sensible diff.
Maybe a solution to the confusion about how to use the summary, as well as how MinorEdits tend to obliterate the summary, not to mention my reluctance to edit the summary now when I can't figure out what it is saying, is to have two summary fields.

Just select the files you want to modify, and then edit the conditions...you can even choose whether the new condition text will be appended, prepended, etc.
Thanks for lookin into that - but I wnated to edit a bunch of conditions and each one is a little unique, that's why I was hoping for an ability to edit the summary report and re-import it.
