Topic: Editio typica

THIRD EDITIO TYPICA OF THE ROMAN MISSAL
The following brief overview is drawn from the presentation to the press of the editio typica tertia by the Cardinal Prefect and the Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on 22 March 2002.
The editio typica becomes the paradigm to which one must refer for the faithful translation of liturgical texts into the vernacular.
The third editio typica of the Roman Missal is certainly a gift, offered to the particular Churches of the Roman Rite by the Holy See and especially by the Holy Father, with the guarantee of authenticity or, essentially, fidelity to the traditio inherited from his predecessors who passed it on to the next generations.

NOTICES The history of the Editio Typica and the GIRM is as follows: 1.
This Congregation for Divine Worship, at the mandate of the Pope, now promulgates and declares to be the "editio typica" this new edition of the Roman Missal prepared in accord with the decrees of Vatican Council II.
When he promulgated the "editio princeps" of the Roman Missal, our predecessor St. Pius V offered it to the people of Christ as the instrument of liturgical unity and the expression of a pure and reverent worship in the Church.

This Latin version is called the ‘editio typica’ and it is to this edition that all languages tested and compared themselves.
I have been a priest for nearly 21 years now and I have certainly gone through various stages of change and development, ranging from speaking and signing simultaneously using hearing aids and loop systems, to signing without voice and without any hearing at all (I lost all my residual hearing a couple of years ago).
Whether we will learn more about ‘editio typica’, and whatever those experts from Rome will say to us, I must emphasize to all - that we are all Apostles and Servants to Deaf people, and we must serve as faithfully and conscientiously as possible.

The latest typical edition of the Missal, issued last year, is called "editio typica tertia", which means "third typical edition".
The present vulgate of the Holy Bible is the "editio typica altera", and is known as "Nova Vulgata" or "New Vulgate".

The new edition-- the third "editio typica" or authoritative version of the Roman Missal since Vatican II-- is the product of a 10-year process.
The "editio typica" is now being sent to the bishops' conferences of the world, to be translated into the various vernacular languages.
It replaces the previous "editio typica," which was promulgated in 1975.

To be sure, the term editio typica is mentioned twice in Scripturarum thesaurus.
Editio typica in the document means only that when the Nova Vulgata is reprinted, the text of this edition (Libreria Editrice Vaticana 1979) must be followed exactly.
Bishop Descamps made the same point: "The adjective "typica" (from typos, model) means here, as it does in liturgical law, the "exemplary" edition of a text to which any new edition of the text must strictly conform.

Bishop Descamps made the point with perfect clarity (in his footnote one): "The adjective 'typica' (from typos, model) means here, as it does in liturgical law, the 'exemplary' edition of a text to which any new edition of the text must strictly conform.
Thus, the use of the word 'typica' says nothing about the relation between the Neo-Vulgate and texts related to it such as the Vulgate or the original texts of both Testaments." In fact, an "Editio typica altera" appeared in 1986.
The application of editio typica to biblical texts to make them authoritative is a misinterpretation of the term.

Holy See's Observations on ICEL English-language Translation of the Roman Missal
Obviously the promulgation of the editio typica tertia would have necessitated a number of adaptations to the translation in any event.
Only those textual adjustments should be made which are necessitated by the manner in which the editio typica has employed the official Latin text (e.g., sometimes adding a vocative such as "Domine" or condensing two verses).
For the sake of such unity as regards the biblical text, it is appropriate and preferable that this element of diversity be maintained among the versions of the Roman Missal eventually to be published by the various Conferences.

The first stages of the postconciliar reform of the Mass were marked by Pope Paul VI’s apostolic constitution Missale Romanum (1969), which was quickly followed by the revised Ordo Missae (1970), including the first edition of the Institutio Generalis Missalis Romani (1970).
This last document, which described the form for the new Order of Mass, was further revised in 1972 and yet more definitely as a part of the editio typica altera of the Missale Romanum on March 27, 1975.
After many years of preparation, the publication of an editio typica tertia of the Missale Romanum was authorized by Pope John Paul II in the course of the Jubilee Year of our Redemption and was published in spring 2001.

Zenit News Agency - The World Seen From Rome
VATICAN CITY, MARCH 22, 2002 (Zenit.org).- The third edition of the Roman Missal in Latin is not simply the reprinting of an enlarged edition, but an "editio typica," an official, updated edition for the eucharistic celebration.
The result of 10 years of work by the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, it serves as a basis for translation into various languages, a task entrusted to bishops´ conferences with the approval of the Holy See.
The cardinal explained that the "new normative is a notable extension of what had been established to date, namely, that it is the competence of the diocesan bishop to issue norms for his diocese on the distribution of Communion under both species."

Since the Missale Romanum, editio typica tertia and its calendar are in effect, however, the following notes are offered on the observance of these celebrations in 2003.
It should be noted, however, that during the year 2003, the celebrations for Saint Louis Grignion de Montfort (April 28th), Our Lady of Fatima (May 13th) and Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and his companions (November 24th) are not observed as optional memorials since they fall on Sundays.
