Edmonds, the oldest city in Snohomish County, began in 1890 as a logging camp and red cedar shingle mill town, and has grown into a sophisticated city known for its festivals and shopping and business district, including art galleries, antique stores, and bookstores.
In 1884, Edmonds opened its first post office, and by 1890 was incorporated, with Brackett becoming the first mayor.
The building, a key visual element in downtown Edmonds, features a 1939 Public Works Administration-built auditorium and gymnasium and is one of the finest examples of Arte Moderne architecture in the State.

As part of the birthday celebration and to help the City and Department capture a working piece of its firefighting history, the non-profit Edmonds Fire Safety Foundation's Centennial Committee raised funds to bring home the refurbished 1938 Ford Fire Engine No. 1.
For several of the early years, it was the only fire engine with a water tank between Everett and Seattle.
The Committee raised over $10,000 to purchase the antique icon, which is displayed at Station 17 in downtown Edmonds for the entire community to enjoy.
