Fredericton, New Brunswick - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
A street plan was laid out to the west of the original townsite, King's College (now the University of New Brunswick) was founded, and the locale was renamed "Frederick's Town", in honour of the second son of King George III of the United Kingdom, Prince Frederick Augustus, Duke of York.
The policies of centralizing provincial government functions during the 1960s under New Brunswick Premier Louis Robichaud -along with the expanded role of the public sector characteristic of the 1960s/70s - led to a sizeable expansion of the city's population.
Provincially, Fredericton elected progressive Conservatives from 1952 until electoral sweep of the Liberal Party in 1987 when they won every seat in New Brunswick under Frank McKenna.

As shown by the electoral data in Table 2, the decline in the LPP vote in the BC Crowsnest Pass between 1945 and 1953 almost exactly parallelled the decline in the Alberta Pass (where there was no sympathetic provincial representative).
We partially attribute this to the fact that in provincial politics the LPP in the BC Crowsnest continued to be a relevant force, successfully working for the reelection of Thomas Uphill of the Fernie and District Labour Party.
In contrast, in provincial politics in the Alberta Crowsnest the LPP abandoned a labour unity approach in the provincial election of 1948 and from that point on was a marginal political force.
