Peter Pocklington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While he made his fortune in the meat packing industry, he is best known as the owner of the Edmonton Oilers and, as such, brought Wayne Gretzky to the team leading to the winning of five Stanley Cups.
He also owned soccer teams such as the Edmonton Drillers in the North American Soccer League, Edmonton Brickmen of the Canadian Soccer League, and a later reincarnation of the Drillers in the National Professional Soccer League.
The most infamous incident involving Pocklington took place during a 1986 strike at Gainers Foods in Edmonton where striking workers attacked police officers who were attempting to protect buses carrying replacement workers.

The Voyageurs: Canadian Soccer Supporters - Update: "Edmonton to get 10,000 seat stadium"....
"The most pressing, long-term sports-related issue in Edmonton is our need for a high quality, 10,000-seat outdoor sports stadium," Smith wrote in an e-mail question to a brief questionnaire.
The Drillers, Brickmen, Eagles, and Aviators all bear testament to an embarrassing history of failure.
Smith's proposal triggers obvious concerns, beginning with the cost to Edmonton taxpayers for a facility that would be used by a small percentage of citizens.

Although Edmonton FC boss and avid soccer activist Joe Petrone would love to have Kowalchuk and Orlich put up the bucks to run the men's team as well, Kowalchuk isn't budging on his own plan.
Kowalchuk's best season in the world of soccer was the fourth year at the helm of the Edmonton Brickmen when that franchise lost a mere $160,000 in the long-gone Canadian Soccer League.

One need only remember the voraciousness with which Edmontonians continue to support the WHL’s Edmonton Ice or the spastic frenzy that accompanied every Edmonton Drillers’ playoff run to know that a professional lacrosse team in Edmonton is a fantastic idea.
A prime example is the consistently high level of fan support that was enjoyed by soccer’s Edmonton Brickmen.
In addition to the fact that Edmonton sports fans have repeatedly demonstrated that they are anything but fickle, our fledgling NLL franchise will no doubt benefit from lacrosse’s insane level of popularity in this part of the world.
