Edmonton City council agreed on Aug. 31 to support the University of Alberta's offer to buy the former Bay Building downtown, which would become the new home for TEC Edmonton and other university units, if the deal goes through.
City council agreed in principle to provide $12.5 million as the first step in a joint venture with the university to operate the tech-business incubator - the Research Transition Facility currently located on campus.
The city designated $7.5 million for required renovations to the building, to be matched by the University.

EDMONTON: In a submission to the City of Edmonton’s Independent Council Compensation Committee, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is calling on the City of Edmonton to make city council compensation more transparent and simpler for Edmontonians to understand.
City councillors are generally advertised to be earning $63,638 per year, and the mayor is advertised to be earning $121,821 per year.
The CTF’s “Fair & Transparent Council Compensation” submission breaks down these numbers, and shows that in fact when the tax-free status and the various allowances are calculated, Edmonton city councillors actually earn the equivalent of $85,110 and the mayor earns the equivalent of $167,870 per year.

EDMONTON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) responded today to the release of the final report of the Edmonton City Council Independent Compensation Committee by calling on Edmonton’s city council to throw out the report and start again.
Under this proposal, if the tax-free status and the various unaccountable allowances are considered, Edmonton city councillors will be earning the approximate equivalent of $103,080, while the mayor will earn the approximate equivalent of $192,171.
In its submission to the committee, entitled “Fair & Transparent Council Compensation,” the CTF recommended the one-third tax-free status be eliminated, council salaries not be increased arbitrarily, all non-receiptable, non-accountable allowances be rolled into the base salary, and the transition allowance be terminated.

The City of Edmonton takes its responsibilities regarding the licensing of pets, the care of strays and dealing with misbehaving pets seriously and currently enforces these issues through the Animal Licensing and Control Bylaw 13145.
City Council accepted the recommendation but asked for a more comprehensive review of the breed specific regulation and broad public input on whether it should be removed or should remain.
Therefore, whether the problem is caused by a disproportionately large number of these dogs in the city, or because these breeds are inherently more aggressive, or because owners of these dogs tend to encourage them to be aggressive - they are a public safety hazard and they should be restricted.

In response to Nike's shameless self promotion as a 'concerned corporate citizen' CUPE Local 474, representing the 600 custodial workers in Edmonton's Public Schools, sent protest letters to the School Board trustees as well as the Mayor and City Council.
The Alberta Federation of Labour endorsed the boycott with President Audrey Cormack issuing a letter and press release calling on the public school board, the city and the Oilers to remove Nike as a corporate sponsor.
While some members of the school board and the city council were pleading ignorance about Nike, CBS aired a special 48 Hours TV program on Nike's factory operations in Vietnam.
