By the early 1950s, the Oil Kings had established themselves as a powerhouse in the league; thanks, in part, to the rise of two locally-bred teenage stars.
In future years, the Oil Kings would need to try and beat the WCJHL champs for the chance to represent the region on the road to the Memorial Cup.
The Oil Kings made seven consecutive appearances in the Memorial Cup final from ’60-’67, winning the title in ’63 under GM LeClerc and in ’66 under new GM and president Bill Hunter—a Saskatoon native and former Second World War pilot who had been involved in hockey ever since he returned from his tour of duty.

In a contest to name the recently acquired major junior hockey franchise, Oil Kings was the choice of more than 75 per cent of the entrants.
The Oil Kings made their first appearance in 1950 and competed in nine Memorial Cups, winning the championship in 1963 and 1966, but left 10 years later.
Edmonton hasn't had a major junior hockey team since the Ice moved to Cranbrook in 1998 after just two seasons.

The newest incarnation of the Oil Kings will be the fourth WHL team to play in Edmonton, preceded by the first Edmonton Oil Kings (1966-76), the second Oil Kings (1978-79) and the Edmonton Ice (1996-98).
The original Oil Kings franchise predated the WHL, winning two Memorial Cups prior to jumping to the new Western Canada Junior Hockey League in 1966.
An attempt at reviving the Oil Kings in 1978 would last only one season, as the juniors were once again unable to compete with the pros.

For both teams' 1960 was their second trip to the Memorial Cup finals but the Oil Kings would emerge as the dominant junior team in the west as from 1960 to 1966 the team from Edmonton would represent western Canada in the Memorial Cup final.
The Oil Kings defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings in seven games to qualify for the national final while St. Catharines needed eight games to eliminate the Brockville Canadiens.
Edmonton rebounded in the fourth game as they posted a 9-7 win but St. Catharines outscored the Oil Kings 9-6 in game five and 7-3 in game six to win their second Memorial Cup title.

The Edmonton Oil Kings added a number of players to their roster at the 2007 Western Hockey League Edmonton Expansion Draft.
