In 1999-2000, he joined the Edmonton Oilers as an assistant coach under head coach Kevin Lowe, and then was promoted to head coach himself when Lowe was moved to the general manager position.
The gamble turned out to be a good one, as he spent 8 full seasons with the Oilers, winning 4 Stanley Cups and serving as team captain from 1992 until he left the team.
He was an assistant coach with the Rangers and Oilers, and is currently (as of 2004) the head coach of the Oilers.

Since signing as a free agent with the Oilers in March of 2001, McAslan has spent the last three seasons with Edmonton’s affiliates in the AHL and ECHL.
Edmonton’s 8th choice in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Morrison was recalled to Edmonton in February, 2004 and dressed as a back-up to Tommy Salo for the Oilers games at Nashville (Feb. 15) and Detroit (Feb. 16) following an injury to Ty Conklin, but did not see any playing time.
The 25-year-old Morrison will be entering his third professional season with the Oilers’ organization after playing with the American Hockey League’s Toronto Roadrunners in 2003-04 and the Columbus Cottonmouths of the East Coast Hockey League in 2002-03.

Walt Kyle, the coach of Hamilton, Edmonton's AHL affiliate, and Ted Green, an assistant under Low and Lowe with the Oilers, were hired as the Rangers' new assistant coaches.
Low, who was a finalist to become the coach of the expansion Columbus Blue Jackets, was 139-162-40 with Edmonton, leading the Oilers to first-round victories over Dallas in 1997 and Colorado in '98.
He worked his way up the Edmonton system as a minor league assistant and head coach before joining the parent club as an assistant.
