Better Transit for Edmonton - A Vision for Transit [1]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
While Edmonton has indeed been fortunate in that the present growth has been largely accommodated within the facilities provided for in the origins of the city, these are approaching saturation and most certainly could not accommodate the projected increases in transportation volumes nor any significant change in the choice of travel modes.
Rapid transit should be recognized as an important municipal asset, the value of which extends to all the citizens of the area and not just to those who pay their fares for the privilege of riding the trains.
The City of Edmonton, by its determination to plan ahead, is making a serious effort to avoid the problems which so many cities face today because the great peak hour tide of passenger movement has increased with a rapidity that has completely overwhelmed their transportation facilities.

Edmonton City Council is to vote as early as next week on whether to abandon the citys electric trolley bus system one of only two remaining in Canada.
The vote comes after a month long effort by Edmonton Transit to convince both citizens and elected representatives that the system of 59 trolleys in its fleet of 802 buses is woefully inefficient and that switching to an all-diesel fleet will save $60 million over the next 10 years.
When Vancouver conducted a study into its trolley system, it placed a value of $184 million on its infrastructure and that value was a factor in the city's recent decision to purchase 228 new trolley buses.
