 Edmund Beaufort, 4th Duke of Somerset - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He was the son of Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset, and became duke at the death of his brother Henry in 1464.
Edmund commanded the Lancastrian forces at the Battle of Tewkesbury, and was captured and executed after the battle.
His death ended the legitimate Beaufort line and, with the death shortly thereafter of Henry VI, left his cousin Margaret Beaufort and her son, the future Henry VII, as the leading representatives of the House of Lancaster.

Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset (1406 May 22, 1455) was an English nobleman and an important figure in the Wars of the Roses and in the Hundred Years War.
Somerset married Eleanor Beauchamp, daughter of Richard de Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick and his first wife Elizabeth Berkeley sometime between 1431 and 1435 in a unlicensed marriage.
Eleanor was an older half-sister of Henry de Beauchamp, 1st Duke of Warwick and Anne Neville, Countess of Warwick.

Beaufort was born in about 1373 and his surname probably reflects his birthplace, his father's Beaufort Castle in Anjou, France.
John of Gaunt had his nephew Richard II of England declare the Beaufort children legitimate in 1390, with the important proviso that they were barred from the succession to the throne, despite being the grandchildren of Edward III of England.
It is thought that this may have been a "private" act (that is, not entered in the public records), because, in January 1397, the Duke had Parliament issue a similar declaration, with the same proviso.
