Edmund, second son of king Henry the third, was created by that monarch 1253 earl of Chester, 25 October 1264 earl of Leicester, 12 July 1265 earl of Derby, and 1267 earl of Lancaster.
Edmund, fourth son of king Edward the third, was created by that monarch 13 November 1361 earl of Cambridge; and by king Richard the second, duke of York.
Edmund Beaufort, son of John first earl of Somerset, was created by king Henry the sixth 28 August 1441 earl of Dorset, 24 June 1442 marquis of Dorset, and a few years afterwards duke of Somerset, which titles became extinct upon the death of Edmund third duke of Somerset in May 1471.

Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York (June 5, 1341 – August 1, 1402) was a younger son of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault, the fourth of the five sons of the Royal couple who lived to adulthood.
Edmund's first wife was the sister of John of Gaunt's wife, and Edmund's second wife was the sister of John of Gaunt's daughter-in-law.
Edmund of Langley died in his birthplace, and was buried there, in the church of the mendicant friars.

The Duke began his appointment by foolishly attacked and capturing the French town of Fougeres, breaking the truce with France and reopening the Hundred Years War.

After Duke, Pratt entered the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, receiving his MBA with honors in 1949.
