Germer received the Frank P. Brown Medal from the Franklin Institute in 1954 for his fluorescent lamp.
Edmund Germer's development of the fluorescent lamp and the high-pressure mercury-vapor lamp significantly increased the efficiency of lighting devices, allowing for more economical lighting while producing less heat than incandescent light.
Germer was born in Berlin, the son of an accountant.

 Fluorescent lamp
It remained to Edmund Germer and coworkers to propose in 1926 to coat the tube with fluorescent powder which converts ultraviolet light emitted by a rare gas into better spectrally distributed light (also bringing high pressure of the gas at the same time).
General Electrics later bought Germer's patent and under the impulsion of George Inman brought the fluorescent lamp to wide commercial use in 1938.

This lamp had some applications in photography where color was not yet an issue, thanks to its much higher efficiency than incandescent lamps.
Edmund Germer and coworkers proposed in 1926 to increase the operating pressure within the tube and to coat the tube with fluorescent powder which converts ultraviolet light emitted by a rare gas into more uniformly white-colored light.

The man recognized today as the inventor of the fluorescent lamp was Edmund Germer.
Germer and some of his coworkers were able to increase the operating pressure with the fluorescent tube and also proposed coating the inside of the tube with a fluorescent powder that would convert ultraviolet light into a more normal and uniform white colored light.
Germer’s patent and was able under the direction of George Inman to bring the fluorescent lamp into commercial applications.
