In May 1848, the Edmund Kennedy expedition landed just a few kilo-metres north of where Cardwell was later to be founded, and set off to walk to Cape York.
Kennedy was killed by Jadhaigana Aborigines while negotiating a river within sight of the cape; Jackey managed to reach the waiting schooner Ariel, which set off down the coast to find only two of the other expedition members still alive.
The little Edmund Kennedy National Park, down a short road off the highway 22km from Cardwell, marks the spot where the doomed expedition struck inland, and you have to ponder the wisdom of trying to manoeuvre carts through the paperbark and mangrove thickets – romantically described by Kennedy's informant as "wooded hills and green valleys".
