Edmund James Peck was born near Manchester, England on April 15, 1850, the first of four children.
Immediately after their marriage the Pecks returned to Northern Canada and spent the winter in Moose Factory teaching until Peck was ordered to change his base of operations from Little Whale River to Fort George.
Peck continued to visit Little Whale during the winter months until his wife fell very ill after the birth of their third child, in August of 1891, and Peck and his family were forced to return to England.

The images from the Peck Archives are housed at the General Synod Archives of the Anglican Church of Canada.
Most are related to Edmund Peck's work on Inukitut grammars and his introduction of the Evans syllabic writing system to the Inuit.
There are also a few images of Cree works produced at or for the Moosonee Mission Press which were also in the Peck collection.

Description: 4 TLS dated 1897-1898 from literary critic Harry Thurston Peck (1856-1914) to George Merriam Hyde, regarding items for publication, with references to "The Personal Equation," the "Book Buyer," the "Commercial Advertiser," an article on clerical borrowings, and the "Critic." Also, 1 brief ALS dated 8/8/1898 from Peck to Dr. Cooper, in reference to Hyde.
Peck taught Latin at Columbia University from 1882-1910, and he edited "Bookman" from 1895-1902.
Description: 1 ALS dated 4/13/1851 from critic, poet, and stockbroker Edmund Clarence Stedman (1833-1908) to James Hyde, apparently regarding Stedman's dismissal from Yale; sent from Yale.
