 Edmund Hamilton Sears
Edmund Hamilton Sears (April 6, 1810-January 16, 1876), a Unitarian parish minister and author, was understood in his day to be conservative and not in sympathy with either "broad church" or "radical" Unitarians.
Ironically, the piety and theology of Edmund Sears, author of this "humanist" carol, were intensely Christ-centered.
Sears," she wrote, "though I cannot quite agree with all his conclusions." He had not the temperament of a reformer, but as she observed, "He had no reluctance to incur obloquy in vindication of the right." Sears preached the equality of women and men.

Sears was a Unitarian clergyman, typical in his social concern, untypical in his belief of the divinity of Christ.
The Rev. Edmund Hamilton Sears, 1810-76, Unitarian minister in Massachusettes, lived at a time when it was possible to write in more sanguine terms of the approach of the age of gold.
Edmund Sears wrote this Christmas hymn, printed first in the Christian Register for December 29, 1849, while he was minister to the Unitarian congregation in Wayland, Massachusetts.

The old vessels were withdrawn, and Capt Dean Sears commanded the "David Porter," and Capt Joseph H Sears the "Combine." The former continued to run as a packetafter all the others had given up the business, and was not withdrawn until about 1874.
Capt Joseph H Sears also left her to take charge of ships in the foreign trade, and to run and manage them.
