Edmund Spencer, the "Prince of Poets," and author of "The Faerie Queene," died...
Spencer traveled with him and his men over the treacherous journey to Munster, where their party engaged and defeated a much larger, more prepared Spanish force at Smerwick.
However the pension she promised him was blocked by Lord Burghley, whom Spencer took the liberty of satirizing in his "Complaints," published and quickly censored in 1591.

Spencer's use of the calendar frames the debate in the oscillations of the seasons, between the sunshine and the storm, the heights of the human mind and the lowness of human misconception.
Piers' response is said to be aligned with Spencer's defense of poetry in a world that fails to value poetic achievement.
Thus this poem is Spencer's response to the hostility, a hostility derived in part from the cultural notion that fictions were wrongfully replacing the word of God with the stuff of the human mind.

 EDMUND SPENCER
Edmond Spencer is known as "the poets poet" in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries because so many young writers learned the art and craft of poetry by studying him.
In Sonnet 30 Spencer uses the Petrarchan convention of the burning man and the Icy lady.
Spencer uses the extended metaphor of the burning man and the icy lady to portray the conflict a man is having with the girl he loves, because no matter how much he burns for her, she is cold to him and doesn’t give him any notice.

Spencer that if the Wild Man were to attack him again, he’d much prefer to see Spencer die than the Wild Man, and he should consider that an order.
Spencer fumed under this long lecture, but managed to hold his temper until Dr. Rand chimed in again, telling Spencer that since he couldn’t handle his weapons, he was to turn them over to someone more competent.

Edmund Spenser and English Policy in Ireland
Edmund Spenser (1552-1599) served as secretary to Lord Grey of Wilton during his suppression of the Desmond rebellion and then lived at Kilcolman Castle following the plantation of Munster (1580) in which he received land.
The former interpretation was prevalent until the 20th century and only recently has scholarship attempted to rationalise Spencer's work as flowing from the traditions of 16th-century humanism.
Edmund Spenser's View is clearly an example of colonial writing, with its sense of two separate and patently unequal 'sides'.
