		And that was Irish writer, Edna O’Brien, speaking to me at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, where it was my great pleasure to interview the passionate and troublesome novelist, short story writer, playwright, screenwriter and teacher of creative writing who has also written a biography of James Joyce.
		Edna O’Brien’s first six novels were banned in Ireland, and to add injury to insult, the priest in her village burned her books in the churchyard—and that’s some pretty serious criticism.
		Edna O’Brien: I’m not sure what I did or did not do to change the fate of Irish womanhood, but I don’t think I changed my own fate; because one of the things about writing: each book is a beginning.

		Edna O’Brien has a wonderfully reflective piece on Samuel Beckett in today’s Guardian.
		She refers to Nino Frank’s description of the time Joyce visited Beckett in a Parisian hospital after Beckett had been stabbed by a pimp as that of “two Irishmen marinating in their respective silences.” However, it’s O’Brien’s own words that make the piece so engaging right from the opening paragraph:
		It seems somewhat precipitate to broach drink concerning such an exigent man, but that triptych of Irish geniuses, Joyce, Beckett and Flann O’Brien, were well-known habitués of the taverns, putting their sojourns to sedulous good use.”
