Because the Edomites were neighbours to Israel, and their genealogy would be of use to give light to the following stories of what passed between them.
Edomites may be dukes with men, but Israelites indeed are made to our God kings and priests.
This comes in here, not only to give light to the story, but to be a standing reflection upon the Edomites for intermarrying with them, by which, it is probable, they learned their way, and corrupted themselves.

The Edomites were one of the important neighbor-nations of the ancient Hebrews--and they were their kinsmen as well.
The primary homeland of the Edomites was in the area east of the Arabah valley, which extended from the Dead Sea south to the eastern arm at the northern end of the Red Sea (Gulf of Elath or aqabah).
Thus there is dear evidence now that the Edomite territory extended--at least at times--into the area to the west of the valley where their border has usually been drawn.

This is because the Jewish authorities kept up with the migrations of their brethren the Edomites (Edom or Esau was a twin brother to Jacob and their descendants were kin to the Jews).

All three became sheiks in the later Edomite government (Gen.36:5, 18), but they do not appear to rank as high or to have been as prominent as the children of Esau's other wives.
