Édouard Balladur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Balladur's followers, such as Nicolas Sarkozy, were ostracized from the new Chirac administration.
Balladur claimed that he always paid attention to security, but that it was difficult to agree on anything with the Italian company operating the Italian part of the tunnel.
Edouard Balladur is often caricatured as aloof, aristocratic and pretentious in media such as the Canard Enchaîné or shows such as Les Guignols de l'info.

 Balladur, Edouard
Balladur was the protégé of the former president Georges Pompidou during the 1960s and 1970s, and economy and finance minister under Jacques Chirac's prime ministership 1986–88.
Balladur promised to create a successful economy and reduce the budget deficit, but faced strong opposition to his immigration and privatization policies, his proposals for government funding of private schools, and his employment legislation, reducing the minimum wage paid to young workers.
A no-confidence motion in the National Assembly 1994 failed to unseat him and, with the economy improving, he appeared strongly placed for an eventual challenge for the presidency.

Cohabitation (government) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For the next five years, the French government and assembly were from the same political background until 1993 when President Mitterrand was forced to appoint his opposition leader Edouard Balladur to the post of Prime Minister.
Balladur maintained this post through the cohabitation until May 18, 1995.
At this time, right leader Jacques Chirac from the RPR succeeded Mitterrand as President and since the majority in the National assembly was from his side, he was able to appoint his fellow RPR member Alain Juppé as his Prime Minster.

CNN - Ex-French officials deny France aided Rwandan genocide - April 21, 1998
Balladur made his statements during unprecedented questioning of ex-officials by a French parliamentary panel probing French policies before, during and after the mass killings.
Appearing with Balladur were ex-Premier Alain Juppe, who was Balladur's foreign minister during the three-month slaughter in 1994; ex-Defense Minister Francois Leotard and former Cooperation Minister Michel Roussin.
Balladur said that while it was "indispensable" to probe French policy during the genocide, it was "equally indispensable to shed light on the reasons why a violent, biased and often hateful campaign" had been triggered against Paris.

Balladur, presenting his conservative government's policy in the seven-year-old Uruguay Round of General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade talks to a news conference, called for the spotlight to be shifted away from a transatlantic farm trade row.
Balladur's call for progress in the GATT talks was echoed on Thursday by the GATT trade body, which urged members to conclude Uruguay round negotiations this year.
Balladur urged negotiators to stop focusing on the thorny issue of farm subsidies and seek a broader agreement covering trade in services, intellectual property and industrial goods.

M Pasqua is implicated in what has become known as the Schuller-Marechal affair at different levels: as the minister responsible for the police and as the president of the Conseil General in the departement of Hauts de Seine where the alleged offences took place.
M Balladur said that the "real Watergate" was at President Francois Mitterrand's office in the Elysee Palace and cited "the thousands of taps on politicians and journalists carried out by the anti-terrorist unit there between 1983 and 1986".
M Balladur, who had earlier ordered the suspension of all emergency phone tapping pending the announcement of new rules, repeated that had his office known the full reasons for the use of taps in this case, authorisation would not have been given.

 USIA News Report
With the passing of the Cold War, the United States has become embroiled in a growing number of economic espionage conflicts with France and other allies, as countries jostle for advantage in a global marketplace that is becoming feverishly competitive.
As a political ploy, the espionage controversy has failed to bolster Balladur's standing in the presidential race and has revived charges by his opponents that Pasqua is a reckless and ruthless politician who should not be entrusted with France's internal security.
The questions ranged from whether Balladur would run for the presidency to why the French government is so protective of farmers, who represent only 5 percent of the population.

Former French PM Edouard Balladur called for Islam and the West to chase their fears, as both cultures are “neighbours and share part of their history.”
In an interview with the French magazine VSD, Balladur, who is also the head of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the French National Assembly, rejected the possibility of a conflict starting between Islam and the West, adding that Islam and Christianity are branches from the same tree.
Balladur, who is also the author of the book entitled “La fin de l'illusion jacobine” (The end of the Jacobite illusion), said he was favourable to government support in the financing of mosque building in France.

 The Spying Game
That Balladur needs such a smokescreen goes to show that in electoral politics a month is an eternity.
At the beginning of February, pollsters had proclaimed that Balladur's election as President in the upcoming vote was a foregone conclusion.
The head of the judiciary police was forced to resign; Pasqua, his superior, was in trouble; and, since Pasqua was a crucial element in Balladur's electoral struggle against Chirac, he had to claim that the investigation of the magistrate had been lawful and then eat his words.

 Election '95--Fractured France
Second, the two men presented as the main protagonists, Edouard Balladur and Jacques Chirac, belonged not to the same coalition but to the same party, the neo-Gaullist Rally for the Republic.
Indeed, the haughty Balladur, financially cautious and eager privatizer, was so little Gaullist that his election to the presidency was expected in Paris to be followed by the merger of the two branches of the French right into a Conservative Party on the British model.
One could not help smiling as the mayor who had presided over real estate speculation in Paris suddenly discovered the power to requisition housing to protect the homeless; the politician who as prime minister had abolished the wealth tax now paraded as a champion of social justice.
