Perhaps the most important factor in the Edsel's failure, however, was that when the car was introduced, the U.S. was entering a period of recession.
Various other problems were cited, including the unpopularity of the Edsel's trademark "horsecollar" grille, which made it stand out from other cars of the period, and reports that there were mechanical flaws in the model originating in the factory, due to lack of quality control and confusion of parts with other Ford models.
The "horsecollar" grille was dropped for the 1960 model; 1960 Edsels had a body-type almost indistinguishable from the Mercury cars released that year.

Referring to the Model T, Henry Ford is reported to have said that "Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is fl." This was because fl paint was quickest to dry; earlier models had been available in a variety of colors.
On January 1, 1919, Edsel Ford succeeded his father as president of the company, although Henry Ford still kept a hand in management.
In 1958, Ford introduced a new marque, the Edsel, but poor sales led to its discontinuation in 1960.

The rarest Edsel of them all is the Memphian high-top ambulance, based on a standard-wheelbase Edsel Corsair 4-door coupe.
I know of at least 2 1958 Edsel-Memphians that still exist, one is a 1958 Corsair driver that's a little rough but original and the second, another 1958 Corsair that's rusting away in a scrap yard.
These Memphians are not to be confused with the standard (non-raised-roofed) Edsel Amblewagon station wagon conversions built by the Automotive Conversion Corp. of Birmingham, Michigan.
