Edsel Bryant Ford (November 6, 1893 – May 26, 1943), son of Henry Ford, was born in Detroit.
After becoming president of Ford, Edsel long advocated the introduction of a more modern automobile to replace the Model T, but was repeatedly overruled by his father.
Edsel Ford strongly believed in giving back to the community and was one of the greatest art benefactors in Detroit history.

Ford saw this as a way to come closer to parity with the other two companies of the Big Three: Chrysler had 10,000 dealers and GM had 16,000.
Various other problems were cited, including the unpopularity of the Edsel's trademark "horsecollar" grille, which made it stand out from other cars of the period, and reports that there were mechanical flaws in the model originating in the factory, due to lack of quality control and confusion of parts with other Ford models.

First, a word about Edsel Ford: He was, by all accounts, a thoroughly decent man, unlikely his often-pigheaded father, and in the vernacular, he was a "car guy" in the best sense, because it is obvious that he loved cars.
Edsel did spearhead a revival of Ford fortunes, beginning with the Model A and continuing through many well-received Fords and Lincolns of the Thirties, but by 1943 the son of the founder was spent.
Many expected Ford execs to throw in the towel prior to the 1960 model year, but instead they charged bravely ahead only to precipitate the final embarrassment of pulling the plug on the car -- and the division -- scarcely one month after the '60 models were introduced.

Edsel was not yet three when, on June 4, 1896, he shared his father's triumph by riding in Henry's first successful car.
When the courts decided against Henry Ford, he resigned as president of the company, vowing he would form another company with his son and produce a car that would outshine the Model T. In this atmosphere it was Edsel, newly elected president of the company on January 1, 1919, who found a solution.
Edsel's influence did not end with the Lincoln, for in the mid-twenties he was urging an improvement in Model T. Changes in 1923 and 1925 gave Model T curved surfaces and smoother lines.
