Friday, August 15, 1997: Everlasting EDSEL
John J. Pogera, Diener's Hill, supposedly the only Edsel owner in the Pottsville area, bought his '58 red-and-white Edsel Pacer convertible near Christmas of 1994.
At the time, the Ranger and Pacer cost between $2,200 and $2,500, while the Corsiar and Citation ran between $3,700 and $4,500.
The Edsel was the first new car to be introduced for 1958, which put it on the back burner for dealers trying to clear out their '57 cars.

Edsel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edsels in their first (1958) model year were made in both Mercury and Ford factories; the longer wheelbase models, Citation and Corsair, were produced alongside the Mercury products and the shorter wheelbase models, Pacer and Ranger, were produced alongside the Ford products.
One of the external forces working against the Edsel that Ford had no control over was the onset of the Eisenhower recession in late 1957.
Edsels were fast, but required premium fuel and did not make the gas mileage desired during a recession.

Inside Line: Legend of the Aztek -
There's a good MBA thesis to be written about what went wrong with the Aztek, certainly the most criticized new vehicle since the AMC Pacer, and possibly the Edsel (though that comparison continues to annoy the members of www.edsel.net).
The Aztek concept was unveiled to the media in January 1999, at the North American International Auto Show.
They helpfully explained the positives about the Aztek, and bless their hearts, there were positives: Lots of room, a durable and easy-to-clean interior, pretty good gas mileage and distinctive styling.
