On Totleben's advice, the Russian fleet was sunk in the Sevastopol harbor in order to blockade its mouth (the Monument to the Sunken Ships, commemorating the event, is Sevastopol's main landmark).
The artillery from the fleet was then transferred to the earthworks and redoubts that were rapidly thrown up on the landward side before the enemy could take advantage of any weakness.
Thanks to Totleben's improvisations (which introduced a new approach to fortification), the Sevastopol garrison was able to hold out for nearly a year.

He was sent by Alexander II to the Black Sea area in April, 1874, to find out why so many of the highly valued Mennonites were emigrating.
The military service law of that year had allowed alternative service for Mennonites in hospitals and army workplaces, but Totleben found out that the more radical Mennonites wanted alternatives that had nothing to do with warmaking.
Apparently Totleben overcame any worries he may have had about losing potential soldiers.
