 Eduard Suess - Wikipedia

Throughout the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, the great maritime powers such as Britain, Spain, and Portugal launched many world exploratory expeditions to develop maritime commerce with other countries, and to discover new natural resources, as well as to catalog them.
After observing the fact that life developed only within strict limits of each compartment that makes up the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere, the Austrian geologist Eduard Suess proposed the term biosphere in 1875.
Suess proposed the name biosphere for the conditions promoting life, such as those found on Earth, which includes flora, fauna, minerals, matter cycles, et cetera.

EDUARD SUESS: MASTER TECTONICIST AND PROGENITOR OF URBAN GEOLOGY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Eduard Suess (1831-1914) is generally considered as one of the greatest geologists.
Suess is also acknowledged for his work on the evolution of the Alps and for the recognition of the importance of horizontal motions in the tectonic evolution of mountain chains.
Suess’ book is probably the earliest example of a comprehensive assessment of the geology of a city and its importance for its inhabitants, especially as it pertains to their health: it should be considered as the historical foundation of the geoscience branch of urban geology.

Eduard Suess (August 20, 1831 - April 26, 1914) was a 19thcentury geologist who was an expert on the geography of the Alps.
While notquite correct (mostly because plate tectonics had not yet beendiscovered -- he used the earlier geosyncline theory), this is close enough to the truth that he is credited with discovering the Tethys Ocean, which he named in 1893.
In this work Suess also introducedthe concept of the biosphere, which was later extended by Vladimir I. Vernadsky in 1926.

The Tethys Sea is a shallow inland body of water postulated to have once existed between Laurasia and Gondwana, the geological ancestor of the modern Mediterranean, Black, Caspian and Aral Seas.
In 1893, using fossil records from the Alps and Africa, Eduard Suess first proposed the theory that such a sea had existed.
According to current theory, the sea that Suess originally imagined did indeed exist late in the Miocene period (20 Ma), but had existed in various forms long before that.

Similar to many Austrian family names, the distinguished surname Suess is a proud sign of a rich and ancient ancestry.

In the Suess coat of arms as in all coat of arms the crest is only one element of the full armorial achievement.

Suess assumed that volcanism (notably magmatic activity) was a consequence of mountain building rather than its cause, as was widely held at that time.
The work also indicates that Suess was the first to recognize that major rift valleys such as those in East Africa were caused by the extension of the lithosphere.
Suess became professor of paleontology at the University of Vienna in 1856 and professor of geology there in 1861.

Contraction theory: DANA, HEIM and SUESS
Long before DANA, HEIM and SUESS used the theory of the contraction of the earth due to cooling for explaining tectonic earthquakes, this physically plausible theory was defended by those who assumed a red-hot and fluid earth in the beginning.
Eduard SUESS was the one who most clearly used the contraction theory as the basis for explaining both - mountain forming forces as well as earthquakes.
With this argumentation SUESS was able to build a theory of subsequent effects that fit to each other well: Cooling of the interior of the earth - Collapse of the crust - Mountain formation - Volcanism and Earthquakes But the contraction theory of the earth was not undisputed.

II.

The concept and definition of eustasy was first put forth by Austrian Eduard Suess in 1888.
Suess stated “… those [changes which affect the level of the strand] which take place at an approximately equal height, whether in a positive or negative direction, over the whole globe; this group we will distinguish as eustatic movements“.
Since the time of Suess, the concept of a eustatic change in sea-level has been through many stages of criticism, denial, analysis, modification, acceptance, application, and utility on its journey to becoming an integral part of modern-day sequence stratigraphy and global climatic studies.

Eduard Suess (1831-1914) was one of the gratest geologists who ever lived, if not the greatest.
For this work, Suess compiled and synthesised world-wide data to conclude that horizontal motions on earth and fault-controlled subsidence were the two dominant processes that governed terrestrial tectonics.
Especially for vertical motions, Suess used a great deal of data gathered from the west of 100th meridian in the United States.
