The fourth of 16 sons of a chieftain of the Bantu-speaking Tsonga tribe, Mondlane was born in Portuguese East Africa in 1920.
Mondlane earned a doctorate in sociology from Northwestern University and married a Janet Rae Johnson, a woman from Indiana who then lived in the Chicago suburbs.
Mondlane's death was mourned at a state funeral in 1969 which was officiated by his Oberlin classmate and friend the Reverend Edward Hawley, who said during the ceremonies that Mondlane "...laid down his life for the truth that man was made for dignity and self-determination."

As the biggest and the oldest law school in Mozambique Eduardo Mondlane Law School has been supporting the emerging private law schools by providing materials to professors of those law school and by permitting access to its library to students from the new schools.

Born in Manjacaze, Mozambique, the son of a tribal chief, Eduardo Mondlane worked for the UN and was also a History and Sociology Professor at Syracuse University, New York.
