  Eduardo Mondlane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fourth of 16 sons of a chieftain of the Bantu-speaking Tsonga tribe, Mondlane was born in Portuguese East Africa in 1920.
In 1951, at age 31, Mondlane enrolled at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, starting as a junior, and in 1953 he obtained a degree in anthropology and sociology.
Mondlane's death was mourned at a state funeral in 1969 which was officiated by his Oberlin classmate and friend the Reverend Edward Hawley, who said during the ceremonies that Mondlane "...laid down his life for the truth that man was made for dignity and self-determination."

In 1995, at the Centre of Informatics at the Eduardo Mondlane University (CIUEM), started a three-year mathematics courseware development project with the objective to address how to improve the students performance in Mathematics, as a high fail rate was registered at both primary and secondary education in Mozambique.
Since the developed courseware is composed by a bridging course (remedial) and advanced university courses in mathematics, its use was planed to be extensive to senior secondary school students in order to help them to prepare themselves to university entrance examinations in mathematics.

The impetus for the Oberlin conference was the wish of many friends and classmates to commemorate the life and work of Mondlane, a scholar, educator, and diplomat as well as the founder and first president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO).

The project is being supervised by Delft University of Technology, and will be funded for the first two or three years - at a cost of $40,000 per year - by the Higher Education Cofunding Project.
