After wintering at Cape Royds on Ross Island, Shackleton and a team of three sledged to within 155 km of the South Geographic Pole.
Along the way, Shackleton's expedition made the first ascent of Mount Erebus, the 3794 m active volcano on Ross Island.

Hugh, 4th Earl of Ross, was killed wearing St. Duthac's shirt in battle against the English and King Edward Balliol at Halidon Hill in 1333.
He had been released by Edward I of England after seven years as a prisoner?of?war in the Tower of London, and presumably had no wish hopelessly to renew the experience.
The sanctuary was unwillingly violated by the 3rd chief, William, Earl of Ross, in 1306, when he dragged out King Robert Bruce's queen and daughter and handed then over to be caged by the English.

Edward A. Ross was born in Virden, Ill., on Dec. 12, 1866.
In 1893 Ross was appointed full professor at Leland Stanford University, where he remained until his celebrated dismissal, in 1900, over the question of his right to speak out as a reformer on public issues.
At 20 Ross graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, lowa; at 22, after two years as a teacher at the Ford Dodge Commercial Institute, he left for graduate study at the University of Berlin; and at 24 he received his doctorate in political economy at Johns Hopkins University.

Edward VII Peninsula was discovered during an eastward exploration of the Ross Ice Shelf in the first season.
Shirase trimmed his goals in the second season: a sledging party reached 80° 5' S on the Ross Ice Shelf and correctly surmised the presence of land above sea level beneath; the party observed the Alexandra Mountains at Edward VII Peninsula at close hand.
An Eastern Party, intending to explore Edward VII Peninsula, found Amundsen in the Bay of Whales, and, to avoid the Norwegians, headed for the Victoria Land coast, renamed themselves the Northern Party, and were left at Cape Adare where they spent the first winter doing research.

On August 6, 1901, she sailed from Cowes and after stops at the Cape of Good Hope and Lyttleton, New Zealand, entered the Ross Sea and discovered Edward VII Land in January 1902.

Malcolm Ross, fifth of Pitcalnie, was the rightful heir to Balnagowan, but Lady (Anne Stewart) Ross had schemed in 1685 with her brother Earl Alexander Stewart of Moray to transfer title and estate to Francis Stewart.
Munro Ross, seventh of Pitcalnie, had his claim as an "heirs male" successor to the Earldom of Ross sustained by the Court of Session and the House of Lords, but it appears that no decision was reached.
