Born in New Hanover County in 1789, Edward Bishop Dudley was the son of a wealthy planter and shipbuilder.
Dudley had just been elected president of the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad when he won the governor's election of 1836.
Dudley suggested that the state construct a road from Bladen west and a road from Raleigh to New Bern, as well as open an inlet at Nags Head and provide access by railroad to the western counties.

He was pardoned for supporting the claim of Lady ¤Jane Grey; aided the forces of ¤Philip II of Spain at the siege of Saint-Quentin (1557); created Earl of Warwick (1561); besieged in Havre while aiding Protestants there and forced to surrender (1563); took part in the trial of ¤Mary, Queen of Scots (1586).
He was implicated in his father's ill-fated attempt to place Lady Jane on the throne on the death of ¤Edward IV (6 July 1553), and was executed on the charge of treason.
