The Most Noble Victor Christian William Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire (London May 31, 1868–May 6, 1938 Chatsworth House), was a Liberal Unionist Member of Parliament for West Derbyshire (1891-1908), Governor General of Canada (1916-1921), and Colonial Secretary (1922-1924).
While the Duke of Devonshire did not intervene in politics, he was clearly interested in Canadians and their lives, and undertook several tours across the country.
In 1921, the Duke of Devonshire Trophy for the Ottawa Horticultural Society was established.

The Most Noble Peregrine Andrew Mornay Cavendish, 12th Duke of Devonshire, Order of the British Empire (born April 27, 1944), is the elder and only surviving son of the Andrew Robert Buxton Cavendish, 11th Duke of Devonshire and his wife, the former Deborah Mitford.
He was styled Marquess of Hartington from 1950, when his grandfather the Edward Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire died suddenly of coronary thrombosis, until this succession, and is currently styled His Grace The Duke of Devonshire.
When the 11th Duke died there was speculation that the family might move to Chatsworth House, but the Duke has since stated that since his mother is so involved with the estate, he has no intention of displacing her while she wishes to remain in residence.

In 1686 the 4th Earl (1640-1707; created 1st Duke of Devonshire in 1694 for his part in bringing William of Orange to the English throne) took down the South Front, and built new family rooms and a magnificent suite of State Apartments, intended for the reception of a Royal Visit from William and Mary.
The 2nd Duke was the grandfather of Henry Cavendish (1731-1810), the distinguished and eccentric scientist, who determined the composition of water, recognised hydrogen as an element and was 'the first man to weigh the world'.
The 10th Duke's death at the age of 55 was sudden and unexpected, and death duties at the maximum rate of 80% had to be paid.

The Devonshire Collection is considered to be one of the greatest private collections in the world and luckily for the public the house and grounds are open for their enjoyment.
Sir William Cavendish died in 1557, but Bess, who was married four times, lived at the house she completed at Chatsworth with her fourth husband, George Talbot, who was the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury.
