Eberhart (Edward) Julius Dietrich Conze (1904 - 1979) was born in London of mixed German, French, and ancestry.
However, Conze's first significant contact with Buddhism was at this mid-point in his life, at the beginning of the Second World War, and it was through the writings of D.T. Suzuki.
Conze devoted the rest of his life to Buddhism, and in particular to translating the Prajnaparamita or Perfection of Wisdom sutras, which are the fundamental scriptures of the Mahayana.

It seems that for a while he was theleader of the communist movement in Bonn, and in his autobiography <Gnostic>> talks about organizing communist street gangs in Hamburg.
However, Conze's first significant contact with Buddhism was at this mid-point in his life, at the beginning of the Second WorldWar, and it was through the writings of D.T. Suzuki. They were literally his salvation.
However, he was very outspoken, and gained the disapproval of the university authorities and some of his colleagues. With the combination of his communist past and his candid criticism of the American involvement in Vietnam, he was eventually obliged to take his talents elsewhere.

 The Perfection of Wisdom
Iconoclast, astrologist, communist sympathizer, and devoted practitioner, Edward Conze translated Buddhism for the West.
Conze’s pioneering accomplishment is still hailed as a model of meticulous scholarship, and he ranks among the greatest and most prolific modern translators of the Buddhist tradition.
But as renowned as Edward Conze was for his erudition, he was equally well known for his caustic, often outrageous temperament, and the combination earned him an intriguing and contradictory reputation.

Although Edward Conze (1904-1979) was an interesting eccentric (check bio in Google), he was also unquestionably a great scholar of Buddhism.
Conze has not been dethroned as foremost authority on the history of Buddhism, and this book is a good starting point for any study in Buddhism, Buddhist art, or general Asian Studies.

Edward Conze's book is a compilation of the longer Perfection of Wisdom writings.
Conze translated and compared many renditions of these longer sutras found in Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan, and then sought to blend them into a coherent, unified text.
Conze, as he was often quick to point out himself, did not understand the meaning or import of many points in the text.

Conze is also a good guide to some of the main scriptures and his selection covers a sufficiently wide enough array of topics to provide any reader with a good starting point for understanding Buddhist teachings.
Conze does a good job of extracting the pith from the scriptures he offers, so that the core messages from the scriptures come through pretty complete.
The translator, Edward Conze, in attempting to include what is common to most Buddhists rather than concentrating on what separates them, has made some difficult choices and has made them well.

I say this because although Conze does give brief introductions to each translation, the average reader with little or no knowledge of the development of Buddhist canon will not walk away from this book alone with a very thorough knowledge of just what he or she is actually reading.
Conze includes translations of works on such topics as: the Buddha's previous lives, the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, Buddhist doctrines, Meditation, Wisdom, doctrinal formulas, disputes, and future times and Buddhas.
I have not seen this elsewhere, and here Conze does a good job of putting the historical Sakyamuni Buddha in perspective of the buddhas of the past, in particular Dipankara, and the next Buddha Maitreya.
