Sir Henry Wotton - LoveToKnow 1911
SIR HENRY WOTTON (1568-1639), English author and diplomatist, son of Thomas Wotton (1521-1587) and grandnephew of the diplomatist Nicholas Wotton (q.v.), was born at Bocton Hall in the parish of Bocton or Boughton Malherbe, Kent.
Wotton was not, like his unfortunate fellow-secretary, Henry Cuffe, who was hanged at Tyburn in 1601, actually involved in Essex's downfall, but he thought it prudent to leave England, and within sixteen hours of his patron's apprehension he was safe in France, whence he travelled to Venice and Rome.
Wotton was at the time on leave in England, and made two formal defences of himself, one a personal attack on his accuser addressed to Marcus Weiser of Strassburg, and the other privately to the king.

Zoology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The real dawn of zoology after the legendary period of the Middle Ages is connected with the name of an Englishman, Edward Edward Wotton, born at Oxford in 1492, who practised as a physician in London and died in 1555.
It was Wotton's merit that he rejected the legendary and fantastic accretions, and returned to Aristotle and the observation of nature.
The most ready means of noting the progress of zoology during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries is to compare Aristotle's classificatory conceptions of successive naturalists with those which are to be found in the works of Caldon.

§6. Sir Henry Wotton. IX. The Successors of Spenser. Vol. 4. Prose and Poetry: Sir Thomas North to Michael ...
Sir Henry Wotton owes his literary fame to one poem of memorable beauty, to his friendship with Sir Edward Dyer and John Donne, and to the twofold fact that an elegy on his death was composed by Abraham Cowley and that his life was written by his illustrious fellow-angler, Izaak Walton.
Wotton, taking up “the name and language,” as Walton recounts, “of an Italian,” travelled to Scotland from Florence by way of Norway, and arrived, as Octavio Baldi, at Stirling, where king James was.
Sir Edward Dyer, the earl of Essex and his great rival, Sir Walter Ralegh, afford eminent examples, and there are many more whose names are known by a song or two more generally than by other weightier though less important achievements.

 Lynch, "Preventing Play"
The "scientific" textual criticism of Bentley, Wotton, and Theobald, for instance, held that the ostensibly disinterested Moderns might mediate the Ancients' claims to authority: that the plodding meticulousness of a Zoilus or a Tigellius might overshadow a Homer or a Horace.
Swift therefore responded to Wotton's presumptuous 1705 apparatus on the Tale of a Tub with a withering attack on all apparatus, and his satirical instinct led him to the master-stroke of making the attack in the very form of an apparatus.
When Wotton intrudes on the margins of his text, Swift responds by crowding him out with his own marginalia, and his new text is, in effect, pre-played.

The early chapters of the novel introduce us to the main characters and establish central themes in the book: the importance of beautiful things and people, of youth, and of deriving pleasure from both.
The first chapters establish the pattern of Dorian's life as a beautiful young man held under the influence of two older men, Basil Hallward and Lord Henry Wotton, who both seem to be quite smitten by Dorian.
Both men seem to want to be the prime influence in Dorian's life, and Dorian himself seems quite fascinated by the outlook of Lord Henry Wotton, who seems to talk in perfect little aphorisms--short little philosophical declarations that are both clever and cutting.
