Edward Ellsberg (November 21, 1891 - January 24, 1983) was an officer in the U.S. Navy and a popular author.
Ellsberg was commissioned in the Navy in 1914 and served on active duty until 1926.
Ellsberg renamed the S.S. Liebenfels, a large German freighter, salvaged and refitted at Massawa, the General Russell Maxwell.

These letters are interesting because they are very descriptive of the landscape, his battles with the civilian contractors who oversaw the naval base, and the elements, where the temperature got as high as 160 degrees.
