Edward Gibbon stood in the Hutt Valley and to the surprise of some and the disappointment of others he was successfully elected to both the Provincial Council and the General Assembly.

Founded in 1938, the Edward Grey Institute is home to a wide range of research including the long-term study (now in its seventh decade) into the great tit in Wytham Wood, which offers insights into population change.
In combination with field experiments, modern molecular biological and statistical tools are used to test theoretical predictions, for example evolutionary consequences of the conflict between parents and offspring over parental care, the factors that cause variation in mortality due to predation, or the information content of bird song.
Research based at the Institute has always had a strong international component, for example studies of the effects of rice cultivation on waterbirds in Uganda, and the ecology of tropical forest birds.
