Guilford Dudley (1536 - 12 February 1554) was a son of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, and Jane Guilford; and the younger brother of Robert Dudley, the future earl of Leicester.
On Edward's death, Northumberland feared the accession of the king's sister, the Catholic Mary, and already had a scheme in place to replace her with a Protestant, Lady Jane Grey.
Guilford's unfortunate brothers, John, Ambrose, Robert and Henry, along with their mother, were also for a while incarcerated in the Tower, but were subsequently pardoned.

John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As he was without a will and without male issue, the Guilford estate was to be the cause of a dispute between Dudley (claiming through Jane Guilford, Edward's daughter and only child, whom he had married in 1520) and Guilford's nephew.
Under Edward VI Henry had appointed sixteen regents to govern the kingdom during his son's minority, John Dudley being amongst them, but Edward's uncle the Duke of Somerset had disregarded this fact and elected himself sole Protector just before the coronation.
When Edward was dying, he and Dudley concocted a document which barred both Elizabeth and Mary (the remaining children of King Henry VIII of England) from the throne, in favour of Lady Jane Grey (who married Dudley's youngest son, Guilford Dudley).

DVD Verdict Review - Lady Jane
The facts of the case are well known: in the summer of 1553, in order to consolidate his hold on the monarchy of England, John Dudley, the President of the Council for King Edward VI, schemed to place the teenaged Lady Jane Grey on the throne, with his dissolute son Guilford as her husband.
Married suddenly to the impetuous Guilford Dudley (Cary Elwes), Jane is drawn out of her shell, while her party-boy husband is reformed overnight.
The result is that the enthusiasm of Jane and Guilford's relationship is as stifled for the audience as, well, it is for the young lovers.
