		Hyde was the third son of Henry Hyde of Dinton, Wiltshire, a member of a family for some time established at Norbury, Cheshire.
		In 1640 Hyde was returned to the Short Parliament and then again in the Long Parliament, he was at first a moderate critic of King Charles I, but gradually moved over towards the royalist side, championing the Church of England and opposing the execution of the Earl of Strafford[?], Charles's primary advisor.
		Hyde rejoined the exiled king in the latter year, and soon became his chief advisor, and was appointed Charles's Lord Chancellor in 1658.

		Clarendon wrote humbly to the king asking for pardon, and that the prosecution might be prevented, but Charles had openly taken part against him, and, though desiring his escape, would not order or assist his departure for fear of the Commons.

		Hyde's first historical tract was a vindication of George Villiers, the late Duke of Buckingham, which was favourably received by King Charles I. Hyde was called to the bar in November 1633.
		Hyde also became a friend of Viscount Falkland and a member of the circle of philosophers, intellectuals and divines that congregated at Falkland's estate at Great Tew in Oxfordshire during the 1630s.
		Hyde opposed the Root and Branch Bill which threatened to abolish episcopacy, and in November 1641 he voted against the Grand Remonstrance which he regarded as too disruptive of the balance of power between King, Church and Parliament.
