Edward (Ted) Kenna was born at Hamilton, Victoria, on 6 July 1919.
Kenna was assigned to the 2/4th Battalion and embarked for New Guinea in October 1944.
In the 1980s Kenna had his portrait painted by Sir William Dargie and in July 2000 he was featured on a postage stamp as part of an issue commemorating Australia's living Victoria Cross winners.

Edward Kenna is the only surviving Australian Victoria Cross recipient of the Second World War.

He was 25 years old, and a Private in the 2/4th Battalion, (N.S.W.), Australian Military Forces during the Second World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 15 May 1945 near Wewak, New Guinea, when fire from a Japanese bunker was holding up the company's advance, Private Kenna stood up in full view of the enemy less than 50 yards away and engaged the bunker, firing his Bren gun from the hip.
The enemy returned the fire and bullets actually passed between Private Kenna's arms and body.

The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration in Britain and the Commonwealth for valour in combat, while the George Cross is a civilian and military decoration for acts of the greatest heroism or the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger.
Ted Kenna, from Hamilton in Victoria, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in May 1945, when he was serving with the 2nd/4th Battalion, 19th Brigade, 6th Division, near Wewak in New Guinea.
