Young Kent received his elementary education in the district schools and the academies, and graduated at Harvard College in the famous class of 1821.

The head of the Maine militia unit that was stationed at the mouth of the Fish River in 1839 and 1840 was Captain Rines.
In the 1840 US Census the area that is now Fort Kent located West of the Fish River was included in Madawaska North of the St.John River (even though it is on the south bank of the river).
Fort Kent was included in the 1860 US Census under the names of Township No.18, Range 6 (the eastern part of today's township) and Township 18, Range 7 (the western part).
