Edward Kienholz Biography / Biography of Edward Kienholz Main Biography
Edward Kienholz (1927-1994) first gained recognition as a member of the Pop Art generation.
Edward Kienholz was born in Fairfield, Washington, in 1927.
Kienholz' rural upbringing provided him with the skills of mechanics and carpentry that would later prove so useful in the creation of his detailed "constructions" and "tableaux." Between 1945 and 1953 Kienholz led a rather itinerant life.

Edward Kienholz (1927-1994) was an American artist who commented on social and political issues such as sexuality, organized religion, racial inequality, and war in his art.
Hanging on the wall next to the book is Kienholz's title plaque and description of the "non-war" he hoped to wage in a fertile meadow that would become a fallow field of disintegrating "corpse-bodies." In typical Kiehnolz fashion, The Non-War Memorial creates an environment that engages the viewer physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Whether in the field or on a gallery floor, the victims of Kienholz's "non-war" become reminders of the tragedy and destruction of war, and of the artist's hope that the land and the country may become fertile once again.

While Duchamp chose new store-bought materials for his readymades, Kienholz wanted to retain human memory in discards such as photographs, torn bits of fabric, or worn furniture that he scavenged for use in sculptures, tableaux and environments.
About the piece, Kienholz declared, "I'm not sure what art is--you know, art, capital A-R-T--and I don't even care a hell of a lot about what art is, but if there is such a thing as art, and if I have even made a piece of art, The Illegal Operation would be it.
Kienholz created the piece after noticing the headline "Children Kill Children in Viet Nam" on a newsstand outside Barney's.

 Ed Kienholz
Kienholz constructed human scale rooms in which he employed props such as a picture of General McArthur, a June 1943 calendar, and magazines of the time to evoke the era of his adolescence.
Indeed, Kienholz focused on these and other troubling aspects of everyday life in Western culture that were generally excluded from art of the 1950s and 1960s including other assemblages and environmental work.
What Kienholz did share with Minimalists such as Carl Andre and Donald Judd was a concern with the interrelationship between sculptural form and architectural space.

Art in America: Scavenger's parade - assemblages and installation art, Edward Kienholz, Whitney Museum of American Art, ...
In a career that spanned four decades, Edward Kienholz used the detritus of contemporary life to produce impassioned, often brutal works of political and social satire.
From paintings and torn-paper-on-masonite collages, Kienholz moved, in the mid-'50s, to wall-hung constructions of wood mounted on plywood.
While Kienholz continued to fervently pursue political themes in his assemblages, at the end of the '50s he made a second important formal shift (if we count the inclusion of junkyard and thrift store elements as the first).

TV Sculptures by Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz
For artist Edward Kienholz (1927, Fairview, Washington — 1994, Hope, Idaho), the television set was a powerful cultural icon.
When asked about their meaning in his work, Kienholz replied, "[it] had to do with the effect on culture." The six works in the exhibition were made from concrete, five-gallon metal gasoline cans (called jerry cans), old furniture, and salvaged TV parts.
Kienholz believed that television was a marvelous tool of communication that had been raided by the corporate networks to supply us with packaged news, contentless programming, and rabid consumerism.
