 Asteroid Cornell
It's a piece of celestial real estate," the asteroid's discoverer, astronomer Edward "Ted" Bowell, told celebrants at the Johnson Museum of Art on campus July 26 at the opening ceremony of the seventh International Conference on Asteroids, Comets and Meteors (ACM).
Bowell, recognizing the orbits of 1980 RP and 1991 PG-13, linked the two and found they were one and the same, thus qualifying the asteroid for a permanent numerical designation and a name.
When minor planet Cornell was discovered by Bowell -- an astronomer at the Lowell Observatory in Arizona and one of the world's most prolific asteroid discoverers -- on Sept. 2, 1980, he was using the same telescope that astronomer Clyde Tombaugh used to discover the planet Pluto about 50 years earlier.

 C&MS: 140P/Bowell-Skiff
Edward L. Bowell (Lowell Observatory, Arizona, USA) found a comet on exposures obtained by Brian A. Skiff on 1983 February 11.
Bowell and Skiff confirmed the comet on February 15 and determined the magnitude as 16.5.
The magnitude was determined as 16.2 and the comet was described as diffuse with a slight condensation.

Space Explorers Planetary Times - Volume 1, Issue 14
"In a good month, we find five to 10 near-Earth asteroids, but usually, the ones we discover are as big as mountains, or at least football stadiums, so this one was unique for us," said Edward Bowell, Director of Lowell Observatory's Near-Earth-Object Search (LONEOS).
Bowell estimates the asteroid to be just 3 to 6 meters in diameter, most likely making it the smallest asteroid for which we have a reliable orbit.
"This distance is, roughly speaking, the very closest the asteroid could have come to the center of the Earth during its fly-by," said Bowell.

Although Bowell refused to resign at once, he agreed that Tupper could lead the party in the elections in the summer.
When Bowell could not decide the Manitoba schools question, seven of his cabinet ministers resigned in January 1896 and called for Tupper's help.
In 1864, he arranged a conference at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, to discuss a federation of the three Maritime colonies, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.

 3018 Godiva
Asteroid 3018, Godiva, was discovered on May 21, 1982, by Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa unit of Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Bowell named it for an 11th-century English noblewoman, Lady Godiva, the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, who were remote ancestors of Queen Elizabeth II (who is their 31-times-great-granddaughter).
Godiva (the name is a variant of Godgifu, Old English for "gift of God"), was a philanthropist who gave generously to the Catholic Church in Ely and in Coventry.

 Comet Discoverer Shoemaker Dies
Shoemaker died in a two-car accident near Alice Springs, Australia, said Edward Bowell, a fellow astronomer at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff.
Bowell said Shoemaker ``more or less single-handedly created the field of impacts...
``I think that was the greatest disappointment of his life, that he failed to be standing on the moon with his geological hammer tapping on the rocks,'' Bowell said.

CNN - Comet co-discoverer Eugene Shoemaker dies in crash - July 18, 1997
The couple had been in Australia for about two weeks on an annual trip to search for asteroid impact craters in the outback, said astronomer Edward Bowell, also with the Lowell Observatory.
Shoemaker yearned to be an astronaut but was rejected because of a medical problem, Bowell said.
The Shoemakers and colleague David Levy discovered the comet named for them in March 1993 at the Palomar Mountain Observatory in California.

so we had a bit of luck,'' said Edward Bowell, director of Lowell Observatory's Near Earth Object Search program.
Based on observations of SQ222 and subsequent calculations, Bowell said it does not appear that the asteroid will pass close to Earth again for at least another decade.
``You never know what you're going to find, and you're never going to find anything unless you look,'' Bowell said.

This asteroid was discovered 25 years ago by Edward "Ted" Bowell who now heads the Lowell Observatory Near Earth Object Survey.
Note about spelling: in the years since Ted Bowell named asteroid 2822 for Sacajawea, other spellings of her name have become common.
Named for the young Shoshone Indian woman who guided Lewis and Clark on their expedition of discovery across North America to the Pacific Ocean during 1804-1806.

As a scientific colleague and friend, his guidance was unerring and will be irreplaceable." Edward Bowell, Astronomer Lowell Observatory 1400 W. Mars Hill Road Flagstaff AZ 86001
He was a renaissance man, having one of the broadest grasps of any scientist I know, working as a geologist, training to be an astronaut, dating the surfaces of the Moon and other satellites, and helping, with his wife Carolyn, discover more interesting comets and asteroids than any other person.
