Edward Llwyd (or Lhuyd) was born in 1660, the son of Edward Llwyd of Llanforda, near Oswestry, and Bridget Pryse of Llan-ffraid, near Talybont, Ceredigion.
Edward Llwyd was elected fellow of the Royal Society in 1708 and superior beadle of divinity in 1709, but soon after, on 30 June 1709, he died of pleurisy at the age of just 49.

He was educated at Jesus College, Oxford, but did not graduate; he received the degree of M.A. however in 1701.

In 1282 he joined his younger brother Dafydd in a rebellion against Edward I. It was when travelling from the North to Central Wales that he was killed by two ordinary soldiers, probably as part of a plot.
Edward Llwyd was a scholar and assiduous observer and notetaker of almost everything he encountered, making his mark in a number of fields - the study of fossils, plants, history and comparative languages.
Edward Llwyd was the inspiration for the Cymdeithas Edward Llwyd (Edward Llwyd Society) a Welsh language organsiation dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the natural world.

 Stones of Wales - Harold's Stones standing stones
According to another legend, these stones were flung or thrown from Ysgyryd Fawr (Skirrid mountain), 23km (14mi) away, by the mythical giant Jack O'Kent.
The first reference to these stones dates back to 1689, when Edward Llwyd mentioned them in Parochialia.
In the same year Harold's Stones were carved on a remarkable sundial, now in Trellech's St Nicholas church.

The name Lloyd is a variation of the Welsh word llwyd or clwyd, which means "grey" or "brown".

A visit to Snowdonia in 1688 allowed him to construct for John Ray's Synopsis Methodica Stirpium Britannicorum a list of flora local to that region.
After 1697 Llwyd visited every county in Wales, and then travelled to Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall, and Brittany: In 1699, with financial aid from Isaac Newton, he published Lithophylacii Britannici Ichnographia, a catalogue of fossils collected from places around England, mostly Oxford, and held in the Ashmolean.

Even in the early part of the seventeenth century, when travel was far from easy, Michael Drayton thought highly enough of the area to mention it in his topographical description of England and Wales, called "Poly-albion".
Towards the end of the same century Edward Llwyd, naturalist and antiquary, makes one of the earliest mentions of Porth-yr-Ogof, in a letter to John Roy, a fellow naturalist.
The cave was named Porth Gogo by Llwyd.
