Edward Tsang Lu (Simplified Chinese: 卢杰; Traditional Chinese: 盧傑; pinyin: Lú Jié) (born July 1, 1963) is an American physicist and astronaut, a veteran of two space shuttle missions and an extended stay aboard the International Space Station.
Lu is a specialist in solar physics and did postdoctoral work at the Institute for Astronomy in Honolulu, Hawaii before being selected for NASA's astronaut corps in 1994.
Lu flew on space shuttle missions STS-84 in 1997 and STS-106 in 2000, in which he carried out a six-hour spacewalk to perform construction work on the International Space Station.

Lu is also president of the B612 Foundation, a nonprofit, private organization attempting to "significantly alter the orbit of an asteroid in a controlled manner by 2015," according to the group's Web site.
Lu and other researchers testified last week before the Senate Subcommittee on Science, Technology and Space, which is considering "whether Congress should pass legislation to do something about this threat from space," said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., the committee chairman.
Lu said the plan would be to fly to an asteroid, attach to it and provide continuous thrust would "slowly alter" the asteroid's velocity, putting the rock on a new path, Lu said.

He's not anticipating a problem however, having trained and worked with Russian cosmonauts in the past, and been a member of a largely international crew on STS-84.
Their EVA was complicated and unusual, according to Lu, in that they used the Russian "tether protocol." On a normal Shuttle EVA, astronauts attach their tethers to a sliding wire and let it move behind them.
Lu describes the technique as "sort of like the way a rock climber might move who is putting up ropes at various places." It is slower than the 'sliding wire' method, requiring the spacewalkers to take their tools and equipment with them, like "pack mules."
