RUTLAND The 1st earl of Rutland was Edward Plantagenet (1, 373-1415), son of Edmund, duke of York, and grandson of King Edward III.
In 1390 he was created earl of Rutland, but was to hold the title only during the lifetime of his father, on whose death in 1402 the earldom accordingly became extinct, the earl then becoming duke of York.

Edward Manners, 3rd Earl of Rutland and 15th Baron de Ros (1548 - April 14, 1587) was the son of Henry Manners, 2nd Earl of Rutland, whose titles he inherited in 1563.
The Earldom of Rutland and Barony of Manners went to his brother John Manners, but the Barony of de Ros went to his daughter.
At Bottesford Church in Leicestershire is the tomb commemorating the third Earl and his wife.

Henry Manners, 2nd Earl of Rutland (~1526 - September 17, 1563) was the son of Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland.
Under Elizabeth I he served successfully and she made him Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire and Rutland, Knight of the Garter and President of the North.
Earl Henry is depicted in armour of conventional pattern except that the breast plate is made up of laminated plates.

WESTMORLAND Ralph Neville, 4th Baron Neville of Raby, and 1st earl of Westmorland (1364-1425), eldest son of John, 3rd Baron Neville, and his wife Maud Percy (see Neville, Family), was knighted by Thomas of Woodstock, afterwards duke of Gloucester, during the French expedition of 1380, and succeeded to his father's barony in 1388.
The earl died on the 21st of October 1425, and a fine alabaster tomb was erected to his memory in Staindrop church close by Raby Castle.
Charles, 6th earl (1543-1601), eldest son of the 5th earl by his first wife Jane, daughter of Thomas Manners, ist earl of Rutland, was brought up a Roman Catholic, and was further attached to the Catholic party by his marriage with Jane, daughter of Henry Howard, earl of Surrey.

Born in 1549, was eldest son of Henry, second Earl of Rutland, by Margaret, fourth daughter of Ralph, Earl of Westmoreland.
On 5 Aug 1570 he became constable of Nottingham Castle, and steward, keeper, warden, and chief justice of Sherwood Forest; in 1571 he was feodary of the duchy of Lancaster for the counties of Nottingham and Derby; in 1574 he was appointed lord-lieutenant of Nottinghamshire.
On Jun 1577 Rutland was placed on the ecclesiastical commission for the province of York, and in 1579 on the council of the north.

Though his religious views would have been repugnant to Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford, Courtenay was named as a deputy lieutenant in Bedford's unissued commission of 1585.
On 14 Dec 1584 he was named to a committee for the confirmation of letters patent to Sir Walter Raleigh, and he may have attended the subsidy committee on 24 Feb 1585 to which he was appointed as knight of the shire.
He was one of the deputy lieutenants appointed by the Privy Council to 'advise' the young lord lieutenant of Devon, the Earl of Bath, who was under the thumb of his ex-tutor Thomas Hinson.
