 Edward Morley Summary
Morley was the eldest of four children born to a Congregationalist minister in Newark, New Jersey in 1838.
Morley was born in Newark, New Jersey, on January 29, 1838.
Morley was nominated for the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1902, and received a number of other honors including the Davy Medal of the Royal Society in 1907, the Elliot Cresson Medal of the Franklin Institute in 1912, and the Willard Gibbs Medal of the Chicago section of the American Chemical Society in 1917.

One of the most striking, in retrospect, was done in Cleveland, Ohio, by Albert Michelson and Edward Morley in 1887.
Their apparatus, shown above, was a massive stone block with mirrors and crisscrossing light beams, giving an accurate measurement of any change in the velocity of light.
Michelson and Morley expected to see their light beams shifted by the swift motion of the earth in space.

 Edward Williams Morley - CaseWiki
Edward Williams Morley (29 Jan. 1838-24 Feb. 1923), scientist and professor at Western Reserve University whose work with Albert Michelson laid a foundation for Albert Einstein's later work, was born in Newark, N.J., to Sardis Brewster and Anna Clarissa Treat Morley.
In 1884, Morley began work with Albert A. Michelson, first building an accurate interferometer (1885), then conducting the experiment (1887) which found that the supposed all-pervasive ether had no apparent effect on the speed of light, contributing significantly to the upheaval in late-19th-century physics that was essentially resolved by Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity.
Morley retired as professor emeritus to West Hartford, Conn., in 1906 with his wife, Isabella Birdsall Morley, whom he married in 1868.

Michelson and chemist Edward W. Morley of Western Reserve University, who was famous for his ability to construct experimental instruments, decided to determine the extent to which the directional flow of this" aether" would affect the speed of light traveling through it.
Michelson and Morley themselves were never quite convinced of the non-existence of the aether, however.
Morley remained at Western Reserve, where he gained further fame for his work that established the atomic weights of oxygen and hydrogen, for which the American Chemical Society has designated the campus of the University a National Historic Chemical Landmark.

This experiment of Michelson and Morley was quickly recognized as the most striking and significant of several different kinds of attempts to measure the ether, which together prepared the ground of doubts and opinions among European physicists from which Einstein's theory of relativity sprang.

 Dayton Miller's Ether-Drift
The history of science records the 1887 ether-drift experiment of Albert Michelson and Edward Morley as a pivotal turning point, where the energetic ether of space was discarded by mainstream physics.
Miller began his work on the question of ether-drift and light-beam interferometry with Edward Morley, from 1902 to 1906, using an apparatus three times as sensitive as the original interferometer used by Michelson-Morley in 1887.
A total of over 200,000 individual readings were made, from over 12,000 individual turns of the interferometer, undertaken at different months of the year, starting in 1902 with Edward Morley at Case School in Cleveland, and ending in 1926 with his Mt. Wilson experiments.

In 1887 Albert Michelson and Edward Morley determined if there was any difference in the speed of light, based on the direction it travelled in.
They built an interferometer that send out two light beams: one beam of light was pointed along the direction of the earth's motion, the other light beam was pointed at a 90 degree angle relative to the first light beam.

 Modern Physics The Michelson-Morley Experiment
The speed of light turned out to be the same, in all directions and at all times, both in 1881 in Postdam, Germany and later in Cleveland in an experiment that Michelson performed with chemist Edward Morley.
I would suggest that almost the only hypothesis that can reconcile this opposition is that the length of material bodies changes, according as they are moving through the ether [through absolute space] or across it, by an amount depending in the square of the ration of their velocities to that of light".
It was supposed that a variation in the speed of light would occur depending on the orientation of their experimental apparatus relative to the ether.

This result was later on used by Einstein to refute the existence of the ether and allowed him to develop special relativity without this artificial (and sadly for the Steampunk universe non-existent) constraint.
Although Michelson and Morley were expecting measuring different speeds of light in each direction, they found no indication of a different speed in any orientation or at any position of the Earth in its annual orbit around the Sun.
In 1895, Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (1853-1928) concluded that the "null" result obtained by Michelson and Morley was caused by a effect of contraction made by the ether on their apparatus and introduced the length contraction equation

An American Scientist on the Research Frontier is the first scholarly study of the nineteenth-century American scientist Edward Williams Morley.

This important examination of Morley’s struggle for personal and professional legitimacy extends and transforms our understanding of science during a foundational period, and leads to a number of unique conclusions that are vital to the literature and historiography of science.
