Also at the end of March, Natapei said he wouldn't bow to pressure for his resignation until the outcome of a court ruling sometime in April on whether last year's VP Congress meeting had properly re-elected him as party leader in a contest in which Kalpokas bid for the leadership.
Natapei's attempts to stave off loss of office by sacking some VP stalwarts from cabinet to make way for replacements who, a short while before were his political foes, provoked a backlash and ultimatum for his resignation from indignant VP factions.
Natapei's November ditching of then deputy prime minister Serge Vohor and his UMP was a surprise since 18 months earlier the two parties promised to stay together until the election due in 2006.
