		This panegyric, which is accompanied by a series of epitaphs and is composed in a strain of fearless extravagance, was, as the author declares, written "unfee'd"; it shows that Ford sympathized, as Shakespeare himself is supposed to have done, with the "awkward fate" of the countess's brother, the earl of Essex.
		Ford by no means stood alone among English dramatists in his love of abnormal subjects; but few were so capable of treating them sympathetically, and yet without that reckless grossness or extravagance of expression which renders the morally repulsive aesthetically intolerable, or converts the horrible into the grotesque.
		Ford owes his position among English dramatists to the intensity of his passion, in particular scenes and passages where the character, the author and the reader are alike lost in the situation and in the sentiment evoked by it; and this gift is a supreme dramatic gift.

		EDWARD ONSLOW FORD (1852-1902), English sculptor, was born in London.
		A beautiful nude recumbent statue of Shelley (1892) upon a cleverly-designed base, which is not quite impeccable from the point of view of artistic taste, is at University College, Oxford, and a simplified version was presented by him to be set up on the shore of Viareggio, where the poet's body was washed up.
		Ford's influence on the younger generation of sculptors was considerable and of good effect.

		Onslow Ford's time studying with the two cubist-inspired painters was not a success, but soon he met the Chilean artist Matta (obituary, November 25 2002), who drew him into the surrealist circle.
		Onslow Ford, who was attracted by the Jungian notion of the collective unconscious, quickly concluded that Dali-style surrealism was bogus.
		Onslow Ford settled down in his "quest for the inner worlds", a notion which, as the oddball, quasi-religious beliefs of Kandinsky and Mondrian had done earlier, motivated a convincing body of work out of a base of technical virtuosity.

	Gordon Onslow Ford
		After a short while in Mexico City, Onslow Ford and Johnson moved to the countryside and settled in the remote village, Erongaricuaro, which was populated by the Tarascan Indians and located on the shores of Lake Patzcuaro.
		In 1951, Onslow Ford with his friends Wolfgang Paalen, Lee Mullican and Jacqueline Johnson created an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Art called "Dynaton." Dynaton, in Greek means "Possible." This exhibition was the launching ground for the "quest of the inner worlds," establishing firmly the future direction of Onslow Ford's artistic endeavors.
		In 1957, Onslow Ford and his wife Jacqueline Johnson acquired a large acreage of land in the virgin woods in the hills of Inverness, California.

		In late 1939, Onslow Ford was recalled to London as a Naval reserve and, as rumour has it, was forced by a fortuitous malady to miss the Atlantic voyage to which he had been assigned, thus escaping death on the first British ship of the war to be sunk.
		Onslow Ford has been recognised as a precursor to Pollock in his development in the late 1930s of a technique of pouring paint directly onto the canvas, which he termed coulage.
		In Mexico, Onslow Ford began to develop his painting away from its surrealist roots towards an immersion within the natural world, a move that was in some way prompted by his fears that becoming a social figure within the New York art scene would ultimately be detrimental to his artistic evolution.

		The standing statue of William Ewart Gladstone (1894, for the City Liberal Club, London) is to be regarded as one of Ford's better portrait works.
		His charming disposition rendered him extremely popular, and when he died a monument was erected to his memory (C Lucchesi sculptor, J W Simpson, architect) in St John's Wood, near to where he dwelt.
