Washburn was the driving force in establishing the Far West Academy in Washington County, Arkansas in 1844 which was a short-lived attempt to establish a college where both white and Indian students could achieve and education together.
Washburn served as the primary Indian missionary in the region until he resigned in 1850.
Edward Payson Washburn was the artist who painted the famous Arkansas Traveller painting that was later immortalized as a Currier & Ives lithograph.

Edward Payson Washburn (1831-1860) American artist, son of Indian missionary Cephas Washburn.
Best known for painting The Arkansas Traveller which was lithographed by Currier and Ives and became a popular print.
Washburn died on 26 March 1860 in Little Rock, Arkansas only 9 days after the death of his father.

The Washburns were missionaries to the Arkansas Cherokee at Dwight Mission (3PP58) (now within Russellville), 1820-1828, and moved the Mission to near Sallisaw, OK, in 1829.
Cephas and Edward died in Little Rock and are buried in Mount Holly Cemetery, but Abigail continued to live in the house.
The Washburn House stood into the 1940s, serving in later years as company housing for coal miner families working nearby shaft mines.

Faulkner often spoke at gatherings on behalf of his favorite political candidates, adding humorous remarks and music to entertain the crowds.
Eventually, the tale prompted a youthful Arkansas artist, Edward Payson Washburn, to render his version of the "Traveler" scene in 1858.
Washburn's oil painting is permanently displayed at the Arkansas History Commission in Little Rock.

Washburn Field is located west of the campus in the bottom land east of Monument Creek.
In 1899 Washburn Field was named for Rev. Philip Washburn, a rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a personal friend of General Palmer's.
Washburn was very interested in the college, and it is said he never missed a practice or an athletic event of the college.

Faulkner is said to have composed the melody and lyrics in 1840 after seeking board and lodging from a squatter while travelling in a political campaign.
In 1858 Arkansas artist Edward Payson Washburn painted a depiction of the apocryphal meeting of traveller and squatter.
Currier & Ives sold several lithograph versions of Washburn's painting after 1859.

Terhune's first wife, who died four days after giving birth to their daughter, has no book publications to her name.
However, according to Kathleen Rais the article in the Cazenovia Republican reporting her marriage to Albert Payson Terhune described her as ``a young lady of much literary ability [who] is a regular contributor to several New York publications.''
