Petter's first concept for the new jet bomber was a mid-wing monoplane powered by a single very-large turbojet, an idea which he had been exploring back when he was at Westland.
Shortly thereafter, advances in turbojet design caused Petter to abandon his original single-engined design and to switch to a twin-engined configuration.
In 1948, Petter moved his design facility to Warton, a former USAAF maintenance base located five miles from Preston, and final assembly of the A1 first prototype took place there.

As Petter states at the end of the novel, it is something even he could not have imagined...

 Westland Lysander IIIA
Determined not to repeat the mistake, Petter sought opinions from the Royal Army squadrons that would operate the new aircraft, and he even interviewed his own engineers and pilots.
The consensus that emerged favored an airplane with good visibility from the cockpit, the special performance necessary to take-off and land from extremely small areas, and excellent handling at very slow flying speeds.
The distinctive landing gear was the result of some conceptual back and forth between Davenport and Petter.

Petter spent much time interviewing RAF pilots to find out what they wanted from such an aircraft, suggesting that field of view, low-speed handling characteristics, and STOL performance were the most important factors.
Davenport and Petter worked to design an aircraft around the requested features; the result was highly unconventional, and, in 1934, apparently antiquated.
The Lysander featured a Bristol Mercury XX radial engine, high gull wings and a fixed taildragger landing gear inside huge spats; the spats had mountings for small, removable stub wings that could be used to carry bombs or supply canisters.

Ambitious, lyrical and sweetly sad in its underlying optimism in the face of bitter hardship, The Beautiful Country is a true hands- across-the-water effort, in terms of both its far-ranging scope and its cast and crew.
Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland has crafted an often-mesmerizing tale of a bui doi, or "less than dust," a term applied to outcast Vietnamese children of American fathers.

Moland personalizes the film and paints a heart-wrenching tale about a timid gangly naive twenty-year-old man from an impoverished small village in Vietnam, Binh (Damien Nguyen).
