Roberts was Chairman of the Board of Regents of Memorial University of Newfoundland from 1997 until his appointment as lieutenant-governor in 2002.
In 2002, Roberts was appointed lieutenant-governor of Newfoundland and Labrador by Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

There are two distinct Roberts lines still with descendents in the area; those of 'the Uncle Charles' and those of 'the nephew, Charles.' Some descendents distinguish between the lines with the designations, 'the Big Robertses' (Uncle) and 'the Little Robertses' (Nephew).
