Edward Sexby - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edward Sexby or Saxby (1616 - January 13, 1658) was an English Puritan soldier and Leveller in the army of Oliver Cromwell.
Sexby secretly visited England a couple of times to create a new conspiracy.
The authorship of the document is usually attributed to Silius Titus but cannot be confirmed because it was published under the pseudonym of William Allen.

Sexby was a prominent speaker at the Putney Debates (October-November 1647), where he denounced the Monarchy and argued the case for democratic rights for the soldiers who had fought for Parliament.
Sexby's regiment served under General Monck at the siege of Tantallon Castle in the spring of 1651.
In the autumn of 1651, Sexby was employed as the Commonwealth's agent in France where he tried to negotiate an alliance with the Frondeurs, but he found that the Fronde rebellion had deteriorated into factional fighting between French noblemen with no interest in proclaiming a republic.

The title of Hyam's book is a reference to Edward Sexby's pamphlet of roughly the same name (Sexby's exact title gains the additional 'e'), published in 1657, as a defence of Sexby's own attempts to secure the removal of Oliver Cromwell.
Sexby was a former ally of first Cromwell and then the Levellers, and in the early 1650s, perhaps the furthest left figure in the English revolution.
People do not know Sexby's story, but if they did, it would be a cautionary tale, like that of Ramsay MacDonald, cited this last week by both Rory Bremner and the Labour Education bill rebels in criticism of Blair.

At this juncture Sexby received from the secret committee of the State Council, consisting of Cromwell, Scott, and Whitelocke, instructions to proceed to France, and report upon conditions in that country and the sentiments of the people, in order that dangers might be avoided and an interest created.
Edward Sexby, whom we met in a former chapter as an agitator in the Army and confidant of Lilburne, was undoubtedly a man of great abilities and extraordinary energy.
In the summer of 1648 it was Sexby who brought Cromwell a letter from Lilburne making pacific overtures [2], and during the first years of the Commonwealth he remained in the service of the State.

The Levellers were an informal alliance of pamphleteers and army agitators who emerged during the upsurge of political and religious freethinking unleashed by the conflict between Parliament and king in the 1640s.
The most prominent Levellers were John Lilburne, Richard Overton, William Walwyn, John Wildman, Edward Sexby and Colonel Thomas Rainborough.
By the end of the first civil war in 1646 their ideas had come to dominate the thinking of soldiers and officers in the all-powerful New Model Army, and the Levellers briefly held the balance of political power.

The second part looks at five special aspects of the revolution: the supporters of the assasin of the Duke of Buckingham, the praxis of the New Model Army, a female prophet named Anna Trapnel, a supporter of tyrannicide named Edward Sexby, and Gerrard Winstanely and the Diggers.
Meanwhile the relationship between the anti-Buckinghamites, the Agitators, Trapnel, Sexby and Winstanley and the larger population is never made clear.
The chapter on Sexby is actually more nuanced, agreeing that Sexby's anti-Cromwellian pamphlet, Killing no Murder, is still within the Protestant theory of anti-tyrannical writing.
